Strengthening human rights education

Strengthening human rights education

The Regional Human Rights Commission of Laâyoune-Smara recently organised an information meeting in Laâyoune with the facilitators of citizenship and human rights education clubs. Hosted by the Regional Academy of Education and Training of Laâyoune, this meeting aimed to involve educational actors in the promotion of the culture of human rights, the protection of these rights, and the contribution to democratic construction. It also falls within the framework of the opening of schools in the Laâyoune-Boujdour-Sakia El Hamra region to their environment, facilitated by the implementation of the new charter for education and training. "Also part of a concern for proximity and openness to various local actors and the promotion of the culture of human rights, this meeting allowed for an examination of the situation of citizenship and human rights education clubs within schools in the region, with a view to creating a regional network of these clubs and establishing a participatory action plan to institutionalise them," states a press release from the organisers. It should be recalled that this activity is in line with a series of meetings that the Regional Human Rights Commission of Laâyoune-Smara plans to organise with various local actors (Regional Academy of Education and Training, the national education delegation, facilitators of citizenship and human rights education clubs, and the association of parents and guardians of students). The objective is to develop an action plan for the 2012-2013 school year to promote the culture of human rights within the school space, strengthen the capacities of those involved in citizenship and human rights education clubs, and support and generalise the actions of these clubs in various schools, while ensuring the strengthening of coordination between them and enriching their reference guide. This Commission, which has been in operation since last December, ensures the implementation of the programmes and projects of the National Human Rights Council regarding the promotion of human rights in cooperation with local actors, and contributes to encouraging and facilitating the creation of regional human rights observatories that monitor the evolution of human rights at the regional level.
