The office of the Figuig municipal council expressed its concern regarding what it described as the "slide" witnessed in the debate surrounding the council's vote to join the Eastern Territorial Collectivities Group for distribution.
A statement from the same office, a copy of which was received by Hespress, explained that this debate, which lasted more than a year, saw members of the council from the majority subjected to "all kinds of insults, harassment, and derogatory terms that demean human dignity".
The council's office also expressed its regret for the "continued abuse and insults" against nine of the members, including the president of the council, who "exercised their right to express their opinions with full transparency in defence of the interests of the residents and their right to receive services at a high level in accordance with the laws in force".
The statement strongly condemned the "growing discourse of racism, hatred, intimidation, division, and threats, especially what happened on 03 January against some members of the council and their children, relatives, friends, and others, for no reason other than that they expressed positions in which they differ from those who reject the aforementioned decision to join".
The same council office warned that "this escalation and slide towards undemocratic and illegal methods" could "increase the intensity of the tension that the Figuig oasis is experiencing". It confirmed that it is working hard "with people of good will" to "eradicate its signs in order to promote our region, and to engage in the collective developmental and solidarity effort led by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist him, to fight poverty, marginalisation, and all tendencies of extremism that have no place in our society, which is distinguished by its authenticity and civilisational openness", according to it.
The municipal council office also denounced what it considered "unacceptable practices, methods of intimidation and threats, and the confiscation of the other's right to differ and express themselves", announcing its "solidarity with the victims of the unacceptable discourse, regardless of its source".
In the conclusion of its statement, the office of the Figuig municipal council called on "everyone, with expressions of wisdom, reason, and insight, especially our respected figures and people of good will, to exert more effort in lifting the tension that the oasis is experiencing and to contribute to spreading a culture of tolerance, difference, respect for the other's opinion, and dialogue in the best way".
