Agadir celebrates the new Amazigh year

Agadir celebrates the new Amazigh year

This event falls within the framework of the celebrations of the Amazigh New Year "Id Yennayer" 2975, organised until January 14 by the Agadir Commune in partnership with the Souss-Massa Regional Council, the Souss-Massa Regional Tourism Council, and the Timitar Festival Association.

"Tasouqt n Id Yennayer" includes an exhibition of local products and traditional Amazigh clothing, embodying the spirit of Amazigh creativity rooted in Moroccan culture.

In statements to the Maghreb Arabe Presse (MAP), a number of participants in this exhibition confirmed that the various diverse exhibits seek to highlight the richness of the intangible Amazigh cultural heritage and the cultural wealth that forms the Moroccan identity.

For her part, the Vice-President of the Agadir Municipal Council in charge of culture and heritage preservation, Zahra El Mansouri, indicated that this year's edition of the "Id n Yennayer" celebration is distinguished by a rich and varied programme, covering 12 locations within the city, including squares, gardens, and the Agadir "Corniche", which gives the residents of Agadir and its visitors an exceptional opportunity to enjoy various activities and events in a festive atmosphere.

She added that the programme also includes exhibitions for craft cooperatives and local products, which value the creations of local artisans, in addition to a photo exhibition that embodies the diversity and richness of the Amazigh cultural heritage, as well as holding intellectual seminars discussing issues such as "Amazigh in light of the 2024 census" and "Amazigh drama and television production", with the participation of a selection of researchers and specialists.

The Agadir public will have an appointment with major artistic evenings held on 3 stages (Tikiouine, Al-Amal Square, and Agadir Oufella Kasbah), performed by the brightest stars of Amazigh song, in addition to performances of the Rwaiss art and Ahwach. The film "Moga Youchkad" will also be shown in Anza, Talborjt, and Bensergao, within the framework of the Amazigh cinema programme.

The programming of this event is also distinguished by the allocation of a number of points for tasting Amazigh dishes along the Anza Corniche and the Agadir Corniche, with the (Tanguift) show that embodies the traditions of the authentic Amazigh wedding, accompanied by traditional artistic troupes representing the cultural diversity of the Souss-Massa region.

It is worth noting that the Amazigh New Year celebration "Id Yennayer" 2975 aims to promote Amazigh culture as a fundamental component of the Moroccan identity and to consolidate the values of coexistence and cultural openness. It also seeks to promote the city of Agadir as a distinguished tourist and cultural destination at the national and international levels.

This celebration comes in line with the Royal Decree announced by His Majesty King Mohammed VI to make January 14, the first of the Amazigh year, an official holiday in the Kingdom of Morocco, which strengthens the recognition of Amazigh culture as a fundamental component of the Moroccan identity.

Celebrating "Id Yennayer" represents the beginning of the agricultural season for the Amazigh people and reflects the attachment to the land, given that this event has always been linked to agricultural activity.

It also carries great symbolism that reflects the rootedness and diversity of the Moroccan cultural fabric, as well as the will to move forward in implementing the official status of the Amazigh language.

The "Tasouqt n Id Yennayer" event was opened yesterday, Friday, at the Ibn Zaidoun Garden Square in Agadir, which highlights the richness of the abundant Moroccan Amazigh cultural heritage.
