Today, Wednesday, during the second session of the January meeting of the Hassan district council in Rabat, a vote of confidence led to the ousting of President Idriss Razai, after months of conflict with council members over the same issue.
Thirty-two councillors voted in favour of ousting Razai, who had previously included a request for his resignation in the session's agenda. He is now out of the presidency, belonging to the National Rally of Independents party, as the councillors from the majority parties turned against him.
Last November, 31 councillors from the Hassan district council submitted a petition to the council's office, invoking Article 70 of Organic Law 113.14 concerning territorial collectivities, which allows two-thirds of the council to request the resignation of the president after the first three years of their term.
Razai told Hespress: "Things were very normal... The other side was the most flustered, to the point that they brought a judicial officer with them, even though there is a reporting authority from the government present. They were perhaps expecting me to refuse or something similar."
He continued: "What we have reached today is a result of the recent partial legislative elections, where I discovered that there was a coalition of government majority parties to remove me from the presidency since the petition concerning this matter was submitted last November, which I agreed to include in the agenda of the council's January session without any objection."
It should be noted that the Hassan district in the capital, Rabat, witnessed much back-and-forth between the councillors and Idriss Razai, who belongs to the National Rally of Independents party. He was previously asked to "provide the certificates concerning the budget spent over the past three years." The crisis deepened with the partial elections in the Al-Mohit constituency last September, after he was accused by the majority parties of "not supporting their candidate," Saad Benmoubarak.
