Producers of sugar plants in the Gharb region recently examined, in the rural commune of Ksibyia (Sidi Slimane province), the problem of the regression of areas reserved for sugar crops (sugar cane and sugar beet) in the region and the means to revive this sector.
This subject was debated during the board of directors meeting of the Association of Sugar Plant Producers in the Gharb, which met in Ksibyia on the eve of the launch of the sugar campaign on 16 January 2013.
The producers of the Gharb region, through the voice of the president of the association's board of directors, complain about the decline in sugar crop areas, the reduction in the profit margin, the rise in production costs (irrigation water in particular), combined with the drop in yield per hectare and the problem of farmers' over-indebtedness.
