The branch of the Moroccan Center for Human Rights in the district of Beni Moussa El Gharbia, Fquih Ben Salah province, has called on the concerned authorities to intervene urgently to address an environmental disaster that threatens the health and safety of the residents of the center of the Ahad Boumoussa commune and the neighboring Douars, due to the continued existence of a random waste dump where random burning takes place without regard for the simplest health and legal standards.
The Moroccan Center for Human Rights stated that the random dump is located near residential clusters and the cemetery of the Ahad Boumoussa commune, and is only a few meters away from the regional road No. 3203, which increases the danger of the environmental situation. It confirmed that the continuation of random burning operations has led to the emission of polluted smoke that covers the sky of the region, which has caused air, soil, and groundwater pollution, in addition to poisoning animals and causing damage to plants.
The human rights center explained that the residents are complaining about the health damages resulting from inhaling toxic smoke and foul odors emitted from the dump, which forced them to close windows and doors to try to limit the leakage of pollution into the houses. It also pointed to the residents' extreme dissatisfaction with this situation, which they considered a violation of their right to a clean and healthy environment, a right guaranteed by national and international laws, including the Constitution of the Kingdom of Morocco of 2011.
In light of the seriousness of the situation, the Moroccan Center for Human Rights called for an urgent intervention to remove the harm from the residents by stopping the random burning operations and removing the current dump. And establishing a qualified dump far from residential areas, which meets the necessary legal and technical standards, and integrating the environmental dimension into all development programs and projects in the region, while taking legal measures against anyone proven to be involved in burning waste randomly.
The center stressed the need for local and regional authorities to commit to their responsibilities to ensure the residents' right to a healthy and sound environment, and to take effective steps to end this environmental disaster. It also urged raising awareness about the importance of preserving the environment, and confirmed that the environmental situation in the center of the Ahad Boumoussa commune requires a quick and responsible intervention before the damages to the residents' health and the environment worsen in an irreversible way.
In his comment, Hamid Rabbani, President of the Communal Council of Ahad Boumoussa, indicated that the council, with its various political spectrums, is fully aware of the effects of the mentioned dump, and confirmed that the council's office has made notable efforts in this regard, as it interacted seriously with the elections of the Al-Wahda Group of Communes institution for waste management in the Fquih Ben Salah province, which would solve many of the environmental problems raised in the province, especially those related to solid waste.
He added that during the opening session of the Second National Conference on Advanced Regionalization, which was held in Tangier on December 20 and 21, 2024, the focus was on promoting sustainable regional development and protecting the environment. Four framework agreements were also signed between several government sectors and the councils of the twelve regions of the Kingdom, with the aim of accelerating the implementation of advanced regionalization and strengthening cooperation in strategic areas such as water, mobility, and environmental protection, which reflects the state's efforts in searching for urgent solutions to environmental problems in the territorial communes.
