The inhabitants of Douar Brahma in Mohammedia beaten by law enforcement

The inhabitants of Douar Brahma in Mohammedia beaten by law enforcement

It was almost noon on Tuesday when the Gendarmerie and Auxiliary Forces intervened with violence against the inhabitants of Douar Brahma 1 (rural commune of Chellalat in Mohammedia). These inhabitants have been demanding for years the improvement of their living conditions and, in particular, asking to benefit from decent housing.

The events were triggered when the inhabitants obtained water illegally to meet their needs, but the governor of the Mohammedia prefecture, Fouzia Imensar, instead of resolving this problem calmly and through dialogue, ordered the intervention of law enforcement.

11 people, including 5 women, were arrested during this heavy-handed intervention, according to USFP MP Mehdi Mezouari.

"Instead of resorting to dialogue to solve this problem, the governor preferred to resort to force and violence," he stressed in a statement to Libé.

Mehdi Mezouari has also contacted the Minister of the Interior, Mohamed Hassad, to ask him for an explanation of what happened and to investigate the circumstances of this intervention as well as the Douar Brahma file, for which the inhabitants have been demanding a solution for years.

"I sent a letter to the Minister of the Interior. We believe that the time for violence is over, because force will solve absolutely nothing. It is unacceptable that people continue to be beaten," specifies the Ittihadi representative of the city of Mohammedia in Parliament. He added: "The city suffers from a governance problem; its governor does not communicate with anyone, including elected officials and parliamentarians."

Mehdi Mezouari also stressed that he would present an oral question on this matter on behalf of the Socialist Group in the House of Representatives, stating that a USFP delegation in Mohammedia was to visit the inhabitants of this Douar yesterday in support of their demands.

On 3 October 2013, the latter had demonstrated in front of the Mohammedia prefecture against the unfulfilled promises of the city's officials. The last relocation promise made to them dates back to last June. It should have been followed by action no later than October of the current year. But it turned out that these were only fine words that do not fit well with the fact that the land for the construction of their housing would, according to well-informed sources, have been available for a very long time.
