Casablanca – The Casablanca municipality announced on Friday its new membership at the global network C40 Cities, a collective of nearly 100 cities committed to climate action.
The municipality stated in a press release that Casablanca has become the 14th African and first North African city to join the network.
According to the same source, Casablanca’s membership was approved at the C40 Steering Committee meeting held in Rio de Janeiro last November. The Moroccan city will officially join the network in January 2025.
By becoming the first city in North Africa to join C40, Casablanca is standing as an example of commitment to sustainability and the fight against climate change, the statement said, emphasizing that the city is thus strengthening the continent’s presence in global initiatives against climate change.
“Joining C40 Cities testifies to our commitment to building a green, smart and inclusive city,” Mayor of Casablanca Nabila Rmili stated, quoted in the release.
“As the first city in the Maghreb to join this network, we want to share our actions and learn from other cities to better combat climate change,” she stressed.
This membership falls in line with the progress achieved by Casablanca, notably in the expansion of green spaces, development of smart transport, sustainable management of water resources and climate resilience.
Thanks to this collaboration, Casablanca will benefit from C40 support to fully integrate climate objectives into its urban planning and exchange best practices with other members of the network.
To the Casablanca municipality, “joining this global coalition marks a new chapter in our quest for sustainability, and we look forward to Casablanca’s membership bolstering African cities’ representation in the fight against climate change”, the press release notes.
C40 Cities is a global network representing over 700 million inhabitants and a quarter of the world economy. It brings together nearly 100 of the world’s largest cities, which are taking bold and innovative steps to address climate challenges, and supports their efforts to become leaders in sustainability.
